I’m not a book snob… or maybe I am. I read everything I can get my hands on, but I almost never read anything twice, especially if it’s fiction. My list is way too long to spend time reading something a second time. I’m pretty sure I could do nothing but read from now until I died and never run out of good material—fiction and nonfiction, Westerns, action thrillers, murder mysteries, literary fiction, poetry, sci fi, fantasy, YA, post-apocalyptic, self-help, and even once in a blue moon, I might pick up something that would classify as romance. In college, I was a literature major, and we covered a lot of ground. Until I read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry, by Fredrik Backman, though, I can’t say that I had a favorite book.

I hadn’t even finished it, however, before I had decided that this particular tome would be well-worn over the course of my lifetime. Truthfully, I didn’t actually read it. I listened to it, and I found myself sitting in parking lots and my driveway wishing I didn’t have to turn it off. I would rewind passages so that I could hear them again because the phrasing was so perfect. The stories within the story are so beautifully woven that they took my breath away. The characters made me fear them and hate them and cry with them, and they stole my heart. And there’s a dog. A dog!

I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to rob you of any of the experience of this story. Instead, I’d like to gift it to you.
